First Look: The All-New Transit City

Transit City is a purpose-built electric van designed specifically for urban businesses — combining practical load capacity, low running costs, and zero-emission performance in one simple package.

Since its debut in 1965, the Transit has grown into one of the most recognisable and trusted vans on the road. Over the decades, it has continually adapted to meet the changing demands of businesses. Today, those demands go far beyond simply carrying heavier loads.

Urban operators now face a new set of challenges — from clean air regulations and rising operating costs to tighter restrictions in city centres. At the same time, they still need to deliver efficiently and reliably.

Transit City was developed with these pressures in mind. The goal was simple: create a practical, cost-effective electric van that meets the needs of modern city businesses without unnecessary complexity. By carefully selecting the right battery, load space, and equipment, the result is a vehicle that delivers everything essential as standard — no extras required.

This marks a fresh direction for the Transit family: a purpose-built, efficiency-focused van designed specifically for urban work.

Built for the Job: Cargo and Conversions

The load area is at the heart of any commercial vehicle, and Transit City is designed to make it as practical and adaptable as possible.

Three body styles are available, each tailored to different urban needs:

  • L1 H1 Van – Compact and easy to manoeuvre, ideal for narrow streets and busy loading zones. It can carry up to three Euro pallets with a payload of up to 1,085 kg.
  • L2 H2 Van – A larger option offering 8.5 cubic metres of load space, over 3 metres of load length, and a payload of up to 1,275 kg.
  • Chassis Cab – Designed for conversions such as box vans or dropside bodies, making it well-suited for utilities and specialist fleets.

To keep ownership simple and affordable, every model comes with a high level of standard equipment, including a durable load liner, interior protection, and secure lashing points.

The chassis cab version has been engineered with converters in mind. Its layout allows for easier body installation, improved access, and streamlined electrical integration, helping businesses customise vehicles quickly and efficiently.

Smart Electrification for City Work

At the core of Transit City is a battery designed to balance cost, range, and durability.

Real-world data shows that most vans in this segment travel less than 110 km per day. With this in mind, Transit City offers a 56 kWh usable battery, delivering a range of up to 254 km — comfortably covering daily urban use.

The lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology is chosen for its durability and suitability for frequent fast charging, making it ideal for city operations where downtime must be minimised.

Driving is smooth and responsive thanks to a front-wheel-drive system and a 110 kW electric motor, providing instant torque for carrying heavy loads through busy streets.

Driver Assistance and Connectivity

Transit City includes a comprehensive set of driver-assistance features to improve safety and reduce stress in urban environments:

  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Rear-view camera
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane departure warning

For fleet operators, optional connectivity tools provide real-time insights into vehicle location, charge level, and performance, helping improve efficiency and reduce downtime.

Built to Last

Durability remains a key part of the Transit identity, and Transit City is no exception. It has undergone extensive testing equivalent to 10 years or 240,000 km of demanding use.

Additional stress testing focused on high-use components such as doors and seating, ensuring reliability in stop-start, multi-drop operations.

The vehicle is backed by a comprehensive warranty, including coverage for high-voltage components for up to eight years or 160,000 km, giving businesses added confidence.

Support is further strengthened by a wide service network and mobile maintenance options designed to keep vehicles on the road.

Lower Running Costs

Electric power brings clear cost advantages. Charging can be significantly cheaper than fuel, especially when using off-peak energy tariffs.

Charging performance includes:

  • 11 kW AC charging: full charge in just over 5 hours
  • 67 kW DC fast charging: 10–80% in around 30 minutes
  • Up to 50 km of range added in 10 minutes

With fewer moving parts than a diesel engine, maintenance costs are expected to be around 40% lower, with service intervals of up to two years or 40,000 km.

Designed for Productivity

Transit City focuses on making daily work easier for drivers.

Features like a heated driver’s seat improve comfort efficiently, especially during frequent stops. Keyless start saves time, while a 12-inch touchscreen with smartphone integration simplifies navigation and communication on the go.

A New Standard for Urban Vans

Transit City represents a new approach to commercial vehicles — one that prioritises simplicity, efficiency, and affordability without compromising capability.

Positioned alongside larger electric models, it gives businesses a flexible, future-ready option for urban operations.

With orders opening soon and deliveries expected later this year, Transit City is positioned to offer a practical and reliable solution for the businesses that keep our cities moving. With demand expected to be high ahead of launch, early orders will help ensure priority delivery slots and specification choice.

If you’re thinking about making the switch, it’s also worth comparing the other leading electric vans currently available in the UK to ensure you choose the right fit for your needs. Unlike many electric vans that require compromise on payload or usability, Transit City is designed specifically for urban duty cycles.

For decades, Ford Transit vans have been a trusted fixture on UK roads, valued for their durability and dependability. That strong reputation continues to shape purchasing decisions, especially among small businesses that depend on their vehicles day in, day out. Looking ahead, Ford’s ability to evolve the wider Transit range—particularly as the industry transitions towards a fully electric future—will be key to maintaining that leadership position.

A Smarter Future for Urban Mobility

Transit City represents a clear shift in how commercial vehicles are designed for modern urban life. By focusing on simplicity, efficiency, and real-world usability, it delivers exactly what city-based businesses need—no more, no less. With lower running costs, practical electric range, and purpose-built functionality, it offers a smart, future-ready solution for fleets navigating increasingly complex urban environments.

As cities continue to evolve, Transit City is well-positioned to become a reliable partner for the businesses that keep them moving.
