The UK's Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) plug-in vehicle grant aims to get more people driving electric cars and vans. It works as a discount on the price of a brand new plug-in van or motorcycle.
Different types of vehicles get different discounts, and only government-approved vehicles are eligible. Launched in 2011, the grant has been gradually reduced over time, and the eligibility requirements have also changed.
Electric van lease grant 2023
Consumers leasing small electric vans weighing 2.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight (GVW) or less are eligible for a £2,500 grant.
Larger electric vans with GVW of 2-3.5 tonnes can currently benefit from a £5,000 plug-in van grant.
The government has also imposed a limit on how many times per year large fleets can apply to electrify their commercial vans. During each financial year (April 1 to March 31), businesses, organisations or individuals can receive up to 1,000 grants. These limits do not apply to leasing companies like us, though.
Plug-in car grant
The government stopped the £1500 plug-in car grant (PiCG) on 14 June 2022. Now, the government wants to focus on expanding the public chargepoint network, as well as on electric taxis, vans, trucks, motorcycles, and wheelchair-accessible vehicles.
In place of the car plug-in grant, the government is also providing £300 million in incentives for electric taxis, motorcycles, vans, trucks and wheelchair-accessible vehicles.
