Maxus T90 EV, UK’s first electric pickup

As new electric vans and cars flood the UK market, the electric pickup sector has been relatively quiet. This is about to change. Now that the Maxus T90EV arrived in the UK, the pickup truck market is finally catching up with the electrification race. Maxus T90EV is the first zero-emission double-cab electric pickup available to lease in the UK.

This battery-powered truck is based on the Chinese T90 double cab pick-up, powered by conventional combustion engines. The T90’s design takes inspiration from the overall pick-up sector, featuring a massive grille and robust detailing that highlights its work-related purpose. The electric T90EV model utilises the same design but the running gear is removed and replaced with an 89kWh battery under the chassis.

What’s so great about the Maxus T90EV?

Motor & range

The T90EV is a rear-wheel drive pick-up powered by a 201 bhp electric motor. Because the motor is located behind the rear axle and hangs down under the truck, the chassis has limited ground clearance. Off-road driving and wading may be more difficult as a result.

As far as battery range is concerned, the Maxus T90EV offers a WLTP-combined range of 220 miles. Charging this electric pick-up truck from 20% to 80% can be done in just 45 minutes with a DC charger.

Weight & dimensions

With a 3,300kg weight, the Maxus T90EV measures 5,365mm x 1,900mm x 1,809mm. Dimensions of the cargo bed are 1,510mm x 1,485mm x 530mm. The T90EV double cab pickup model appears to be a pretty standard pickup truck based on those figures.

Payload & towing

According to the Maxus brochure, the T90EV has a payload of 1,000kg. This is exactly the commercial vehicle threshold required by UK law. The initial payload figure was just 740kg, but it looks like Maxus has tweaked the original model to fit the UK market. If you want to lease an electric pickup truck for your business, this is great news.

Towing capacity for the T90EV truck is 1,500kg assuming you’re towing a braked trailer.

Maxus T90EV can provide solutions for many uses that no diesel pickup can currently match. We predict is that the T90EV all-electric pickup truck will be especially popular among councils. Utility companies, as well as groundskeepers, might also benefit from this modern electric pickup.

Interior & equipment

The visually sporty exterior of the Maxus T90EV is complemented by a contemporary and stylish interior. A standard 10.25-inch digital touchscreen instrument cluster provides a minimalist look. Reversing camera, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, halogen headlights with automatic induction, LED daytime running lights, 17-inch alloy wheels, and a bed-mounted roll bar are also included in standard equipment. Due to its neat dashboard design and floor console, the T90EV offers plenty of space for occupants and storage.

Maxus T90EV pricing

Pricing for the T90EV starts at £49,950 plus VAT. However, you can drive this fantastic truck for about £400 per month if you lease.

Driving an electric or hydrogen vehicle: What you need to know

Switching to an electric or hydrogen-powered vehicle comes with some unique rules and driving considerations. If you’re thinking about making the move to a zero-emission car, van, or minibus, here’s a clear breakdown of what you should know before hitting the road Vehicle weight limits If you hold a standard category B driving licence, you’re normally allowed to drive petrol or diesel vehicles weighing up to 3,500kg (Maximum Authorised Mass, or MAM). However, there’s an exception for zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). With a category B licence, you can drive an electric or hydrogen-powered vehicle up to 4,250kg MAM. This higher allowance reflects the fact that electric and hydrogen vehicles are often heavier because of their batteries and fuel systems. This applies to the same vehicle types you’d normally drive on a B licence – such as cars, SUVs, vans, and small trucks designed to carry up to 8 passengers. Towing with […]
