Is Toyota Hilux the new Nissan Navara?

Is Toyota Hilux the new Nissan Navara?

18 February 2022 | Kate Kozlowska | 10 min read

If you are currently leasing a Nissan Navara and you are due for renewal soon, you may be surprised to learn that this popular pickup is no longer available to lease.

Production of the Navara truck has been halted by Nissan for the European and UK markets in December 2021. This is because of increasingly strict environmental regulations imposed by Europe, which are also affecting the UK. Pandemic didn't help the Navara either. Since COVID-19 and the lockdown periods, Nissan's sales have plummeted, with Navara sales dropping from 10,815 in 2017 to just 4,730 in 2020. This is a drop of more than 50% in sales and Nissan didn't expect it to recover, so they chose to abandon the UK and EU regions and focus on "higher-volume, more profitable markets in Australasia and Southeastern Asia." The Navara pickup truck is currently getting a facelift for its 5th generation but sadly, we won't see it here.

Customers are already contacting us seeking a replacement for their Navara trucks with another pick up that is affordable yet tough and powerful. Naturally, we always recommend our Ford Ranger leasing deals however, there are businesses that require the truck only for working purposes and can't justify its cost. The good news is that there are several trucks with similar capabilities to the Navara that are within a similar budget, and today we will look at one that we believe will fill that gap well.

Toyota Hilux - is it the same as the Nissan Navara?

Introduced into the market in 1985, the Nissan Navara has grown tremendously in popularity since then, becoming a major rival to the Ford Ranger. However, the Toyota Hilux has been around much longer. Since its launch in 1968, Hilux has enjoyed a reputation for being one of the best all-terrain trucks on the market.

Both the Navara and Hilux provide drivers with comfortable and spacious cabins and a tough, highly capable chassis that can be relied upon both for work and play. Whether you need to go on or off-road, finish a local job or do something a little more long-distance because both models are up to the task.

Comparing the two pickups will help you decide whether the Hilux is an adequate replacement for the no longer available Navara. Let's get started.

The look

Whether you're looking to lease a pickup for fun, commercial use or heavy-duty work, both the Hilux and Navara are extremely attractive trucks that you would be proud to park outside your business or on your driveway. The Hilux and Navara both possess a strong and confident presence on the road.

The Nissan Navara's exterior owes its rugged appearance to the 80-year legacy of bold pickups. The high approach, departure and ground clearance of the Navara, as well as its sleek aerodynamic shapes and distinctive LED lighting, give it a sleek and modern appearance.

The latest Hilux features a bold new look – its muscular and rugged appearance speaks volumes about its capabilities. You can choose from four different variants and nine different colours when you lease the Toyota Hilux. Whether you choose the Active, Icon, Invincible or the range-topping Hilux Invincible X, you're guaranteed to get a pickup that's packed with features.

As with the Nissan Navara, you have a lot of options for customising the exterior and functionality of your new Toyota Hilux. Whether you're looking for a hardtop or tow bar, your new Hilux pickup deal can be easily tailored to meet your needs.

The cabin

Because the cabin often serves as your office, considering your new pickup's interior is just as important.

In the midst of a busy day, you'll want a fresh, comfortable retreat, as well as immediate access to all your truck's onboard features. Fortunately, both the Nissan Navara and Toyota Hilux are highly commendable when it comes to interior space.

In spite of its toughness, the Nissan Navara boasts an interior filled with advanced technology and innovative features. The centre console features an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, while zero-gravity seats ensure a smooth and comfortable journey, regardless of the terrain the Navara will encounter.

You'll find durable materials and some eye-catching finishes inside the Toyota Hilux's cabin. With the 8-inch Toyota Touch 2 screen, you can easily view and find information, while also being able to connect your smartphone. It is also possible to upgrade the Hilux to a JBL Premium Sound System with Harman CLARi-Fi technology for excellent audio quality.

In terms of these pickups’ sizing, the average length of the Hilux truck is longer than the Navara’s at 5,325mm. Navara's wheelbase is a little longer at 3,150mm, compared to Hilux's 3,085mm - not a big difference though.

There is no comparison between the pickups when it comes to towing capacity; each will pull up to 3500kg. While Navara offers a payload capacity of up to 1,315kg, the Hilux pickup falls a bit short with its maximum payload of 1,000kg. This rises to 1,030kg in Active Single and Double Cabs of the Hilux.

When it comes to wading, the Hilux has the Navara beat. Although both pickups are capable of wading to quite a depth, the Navara's does so to a maximum of 600mm, while the Hilux's is 700mm.

There are excellent driver assistance and safety systems on both the Hilux and the Navara as standard equipment. Among them are Trailer Sway Assist, Hill Descent Control, Hill Start Assist, Power Assisted Steering, and Intelligent Cruise Control with speed limiter.

Will the Toyota Hilux replace the Nissan Navara?

We are confident that the Toyota Hilux is fully capable of filling the void left behind by the Nissan Navara in the UK market if you're looking to lease an affordable commercial pickup that still offers outstanding versatility and especially strong towing capacities. It's a truck that offers a lot of value for the money, from its tough, durable performance to a strong selection of onboard safety systems.

The Toyota Hilux pick-up ranks highly for its ability to effortlessly handle all terrains and in fact, is one of the most capable all-terrain vehicles available today. Due to its flexible design, The Toyota Hilux is also available in a wide range of specifications to meet the needs of a variety of drivers. There are many configuration options available for this fantastic pickup, so it can be customised to meet the requirements of your business or your family if it will be used to transport your loved ones.

In early episodes of the famous British TV show, Top Gear, the Toyota Hilux was extensively tested, gaining a reputation of being one of the most reliable and hardest to kill vehicles in the world.  Take a look at the videos below and find out for yourself!

Whether you are looking to renew your lease or are in search of your first pick-up deal, your choice comes down to exactly what you need from it.
