Hyundai Kona Electric Now Eligible for Full £3,750 Government EV Grant

The Hyundai Kona Electric now qualifies for the full £3,750 Government Electric Car Grant (ECG), making the popular electric SUV significantly more affordable for UK buyers.

Previously, the Kona Electric was only eligible for the lower £1,500 grant under the scheme. However, following a reassessment by the Government, the model has been upgraded to the highest funding band, giving customers an additional £2,250 towards the purchase price.

Why Has the Hyundai Kona Electric Been Upgraded?

The Kona Electric’s improved grant status follows a successful review of Hyundai’s manufacturing processes and supply chain sustainability.

The Government’s Electric Car Grant assesses more than just vehicle emissions. Manufacturers must also demonstrate strong environmental standards throughout production, including responsible sourcing of materials and lower-carbon manufacturing practices. Hyundai’s latest assessment means the Kona Electric now meets the criteria for the maximum level of financial support.

Hyundai Welcomes Increased Support for EV Buyers

Ashley Andrew, President of Hyundai Motor UK, welcomed the decision, highlighting the Kona Electric’s strong reputation in the electric vehicle market.

He said the Kona Electric already delivers an excellent balance of driving range, practicality and value, with the enhanced £3,750 grant making the vehicle even more attractive for customers considering the switch to electric.

Andrew also suggested this is only the beginning, adding that Hyundai expects additional models from its electric vehicle line-up to become eligible for the scheme as further assessments are completed.

Hyundai Kona Electric Range and Performance

Since its original launch in 2017, the Hyundai Kona Electric has become one of Europe’s most successful electric SUVs, with more than 100,000 units sold across the continent.

The latest second-generation model is offered with two battery options to suit different driving requirements:

  • 48.4kWh Standard Range producing 156PS.
  • 65.4kWh Long Range producing 218PS with a maximum WLTP driving range of up to 319 miles.

The Kona Electric combines competitive range with everyday practicality, making it suitable for commuters, families and company car drivers alike.

With the full Government grant applied, entry-level pricing falls from around £35,000 to approximately £31,250, helping reduce the upfront cost of ownership.

Government Electric Car Grant Continues to Expand

The Department for Transport (DfT) says more than 140,000 new electric vehicles have benefited from the Electric Car Grant since the incentive was introduced a year ago.

The scheme currently provides either £3,750 or £1,500 towards eligible new electric vehicles, depending on how manufacturers score against the Government’s environmental assessment criteria. More than 50 electric models now qualify for financial support.

According to the Government, the grant has helped accelerate electric vehicle adoption across the UK. New EV registrations increased by 35% year-on-year in June, while March 2026 recorded the highest monthly number of new electric vehicle registrations on record.

As more manufacturers satisfy the programme’s sustainability requirements, additional electric cars are expected to qualify for the higher level of funding, giving consumers even greater choice when making the transition to zero-emission motoring.
