The complete guide to van warranty

In order for your business to run smoothly, you need a reliable van. Whenever your van has an issue, you need to get it fixed fast and cheap. And that’s where the manufacturer warranty can help.

This article will tell you everything you need to know about van warranties, including what they cover and what they don’t. We’ll also explore which van manufacturers offer the best warranty covers.

What is a van warranty?

A van warranty covers the cost of labour and parts if your vehicle needs to be repaired because of manufacturing defects. It’s worth adding that the vehicle repaired under warranty gets only genuine manufacturer’s parts.

There are three main types of van warranties:

  • Manufacturer warranty: This type of warranty comes when you buy or lease a van from a manufacturer. Typically, this cover is only available for brand-new vehicles.
  • Dealer warranty: Vehicle dealers usually provide a warranty if you buy from them. Usually, this type of cover applies to second-hand vans and is not as comprehensive as the manufacturer’s warranty. Furthermore, the warranty may only last for an initial period after purchasing the vehicle.
  • Extended warranty: This is a warranty you take out yourself from an independent provider.

What does the van manufacturer warranty cover?

If you buy or lease a brand-new van, it generally comes with a manufacturer’s warranty. Warranties vary between van manufacturers, and sometimes even between models. Each warranty covers different parts and has different terms and conditions. It’s always a good idea to check your van warranty, both for what it covers and what you need to keep it valid. For example, your van’s warranty might be void if you don’t service your vehicle as per the manufacturer’s requirements.

The most comprehensive manufacturers’ warranties cover the following:

  • Engine
  • Transmission
  • Gearbox
  • Suspension
  • Steering
  • Electrics
  • Fuel and ignition system
  • Cooling system
  • EV battery

Which things aren’t covered by the vans warranty?

Van manufacturers generally do not cover parts damaged or broken due to normal ‘wear and tear’. This includes light bulbs, tyres, clutches, brakes, wipers, catalytic converters, and windshields. If you need to replace any of these parts, you will have to do that at your own expense. Van manufacturer’s warranty also doesn’t cover accessories and extras installed by third parties, accidental damages, or cosmetic repairs such as painting.

Does every new van come with a warranty?

All commercial vehicles leased with Commercial Vehicle Contracts are supplied through the manufacturer’s franchised dealer network. Each vehicle we offer is brand new and includes both a manufacturer’s warranty and road tax. In most cases, van manufacturers’ warranty covers repair and replacement for manufacturing defects for a period of three to five years.

When does the warranty for the van begin?

The start date of your manufacturer’s warranty is tied to the date your vehicle is first registered with the DVLA, not the date you receive your vehicle.

The DVLA website can provide the exact registration date for your vehicle.

How long does the warranty on vans last?

Van warranties last for a certain amount of time or mileage. In the commercial vehicle market, this is usually 3 years or 60,000 miles – whichever comes first.

For instance, if your new Ford Transit Custom comes with a 3-year/60,000-mile warranty, it will remain covered until the van clocks 60,000 miles. However, the warranty won’t extend beyond three years. This means that if the van reaches the 3-year mark with only 50,000 miles driven, the warranty will expire regardless of mileage.

When this initial warranty runs out, you can buy an additional van warranty to continue to protect your vehicle.

If you’re leasing your van for more than three years, most of the time, the van maker will let you buy an extended warranty. This extended warranty, also known as “Mechanical Breakdown Insurance” (MBI), helps cover the cost if your van ends up breaking down after your first warranty is finished.

At Commercial Vehicle Contracts, we also provide an optional maintenance package with every van lease that you might find beneficial. This package, available for a small additional monthly fee, provides extra assurance. It covers tyre replacements when needed, annual MOTs, regular servicing, and repairs for any faults that arise. Our maintenance packages are valid for the entire length of your van lease agreement.

The importance of van warranty

Understanding the warranty coverage provided by van manufacturers is crucial when purchasing or leasing a new vehicle. Notably, Toyota, Maxus and Nissan stand out with their robust warranty offerings, providing longer coverage compared to other manufacturers. This information can play a vital role in deciding which van suits your business needs the best. Remember, a good van warranty not only provides a safety net against unforeseen trading conditions but also signifies the manufacturer’s confidence in their product. Don’t forget to consider this important factor when choosing your next van lease.
