Located in Palo Alto, California, Tesla Motors, Inc. is an American automaker that specialises in electric vehicles. Gigafactory 1, an electric car manufacturing facility near Reno, Nevada, and Tesla's primary vehicle manufacturing facility in Fremont, California, are just some of Tesla's facilities, which it operates. SolarCity, another SolarCity subsidiary, also manufactures solar panels.
At the beginning of 2019, Tesla will sell three models of cars--the Model S, Model X, and Model 3. Furthermore, the company is taking reservations for the Model Y, Roadster (2020) and Semi vehicles. Among Tesla's products are the Powerwall and Powerpack batteries, solar panels, rooftop solar tiles, and other products. The company was founded in July 2003 under the name Tesla Motors by engineers Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. The company name pays homage to engineer Nikola Tesla.
As part of its Series A round of funding, Tesla Motors was joined by Elon Musk, J. B. Straubel and Ian Wright. All of them have retroactively been granted the title of cofounder. In addition, Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk expressed the hope that the company eventually would offer electric cars at affordable prices for consumers. Musk also served as chairman and is now the company's chief executive officer.
Since February 2017, Tesla Motors' name has been shortened to Tesla. Ten years after developing the first plug-in vehicle, Tesla was the world's most popular plug-in vehicle brand and automaker, selling 245,240 units and controlling 12% of the market share. The number of Tesla vehicles sold in the United States increased by 280%, from 48,000 in 2017 to 182,400 in 2018. Sales worldwide increased by 138% from 2017.
