How to improve your van's fuel economy

In today's economy, everyone's looking for a way to save money on their vehicle, and with the biggest outgoing being fuel, it's no wonder electric vehicles and super-efficient vehicles are being introduced to the market yearly.

But how can you improve the efficiency and fuel economy of your existing vehicle? How can you make your tank last that little bit longer?

Have a look at the 4 most common mistakes people make below.

1) Reduce unnecessary weight

It's completely normal to go weeks if not months without giving your vehicle a tidy-up however if you're carrying tools and equipment and other items, you could quickly find yourself storing everything in your vehicle.

Reducing the amount of unnecessary equipment in your vehicle will go a long way towards reducing weight and improving efficiency, only using the equipment you need for each job could help save on fuel.

2) Change your driving habits

As soon as you pass your test, its very easy to let bad habits creep into your every day driving style, and this could have an impact. Maximum fuel efficiency occurs when driving between 40 and 55mph in your vehicles top gear.

Anything above 60mph and you'll notice your vehicle guzzle the remaining fuel.

3) Under inflated tyres

Tyres that are under inflated will increase your van’s fuel consumption by as much as 3-5%.  Carry out a check every two weeks, especially if you do a substantial amount of long-distance driving and carry heavy items.

4) Plan your journey in advance

Find yourself going round and round in circles? Use a SatNav! Not planning your journey and getting lost can be time consuming and very frustrating.  In addition to knowing the correct route, drivers can be given advance warning of congested roads and traffic problems, leaving the driver to use an alternate route.
