The Hilux GR Sport is Toyota's brand-new top-of-the-line model. According to Toyota, the Hilux GR Sport has been “designed to capture the attention of customers whose active lifestyles go well beyond the everyday, giving them an ideal vehicle for adventurous journeys and sporting pursuits”. The addition of 'Sport' to a pickup may raise a few eyebrows, but let's see what Toyota was able to accomplish with this truck.
The new Hilux GR Sport pickup will hit UK shores in summer 2022
Toyota is always keen to highlight its Dakar achievements with the Hilux, and it's this tough offroad race that is the inspiration behind the Toyota Hilux GR Sport truck. Toyota Gazoo Racing, the Japanese giant's motorsports arm, worked together with the GR to improve the Hilux GR Sport. Sharper looks, sportier interior trim, and a few mechanical changes were made to this already popular pick-up truck.
"The Toyota Hilux has a legendary reputation for toughness and reliability," said Toyota Gazoo Racing driver Nasser Al-Attiyah. "This new model, which was inspired by our iconic Dakar race cars, brings new levels of driving experience both on-road and when going off-road. It truly encapsulates the spirit of our race cars, bringing a part of Dakar to buyers all over the world.”
Better handling and performance
If you thought this would be yet another upgrade with just a few bodywork modifications to make it look more sporty, you're in for a pleasant surprise. The brand's engineers have modified the truck's suspension by fitting stiffer front springs and monotube shock absorbers, promising a better driving experience with greater control, responsiveness, and grip. Monotube technology increases the piston area inside the damper body, resulting in faster responses, improved heat dissipation, and better performance. Adjustments to the suspension on the GR Sport model are in line with the changes applied to the updated Hilux, which include new rear leaf springs and bushes. As a result of these changes, Toyota claims its Hilux GR Sport pickup truck now offers a more comfortable, controlled ride with improved on-road handling, allowing you to take full advantage of its 204hp 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine.
The Toyota Hilux GR Sport pick-up truck comes with an automatic transmission as standard, as well as a limited slip differential and 'Active Traction Control' - the latter of which is designed more for off-roading abilities than cornering.
Sharper appearance
The new Toyota Hilux GR Sport models will be distinguished from the rest of the Toyota Hilux line-up by a black mesh grille with the brand name across the centre, recalling the iconic 4th generation Hilux of the 1980s.
Also included are larger fog light surrounds and all-terrain tyres mounted on 17-inch alloy wheels finished in black. Black detailing can also be found on the wing mirror casings, side steps, wheel arch extensions, and tailgate handle, along with discreet GR Sport badges.

Sporty interior
The black theme continues inside of the Hilux GR Sport cabin, with sports seats trimmed in a mix of black leather and synthetic suede and complemented with red perforations and red stitching. There is also a red stripe on the dashboard. GR badges appear on the starter button, back of the seats, and even carpet mats, while the aluminium pedals and carbon-fibre-style trim pieces complete the sporty look.

Equipment
Standard equipment on the Hilux GR Sports is derived from our top-selling pickup truck leasing deal - the Hilux Invincible. Heated seats, a navigation system, and a premium JBL sound system are included. As well as keyless entry, two-zone climate control and LED headlights, the Hilux GR Sport comes with a sat nav and a 360-degree manoeuvring camera.
Payload and towing capacity
GR Sport has the same one-tonne payload capacity as other Hilux trucks and can tow braked trailers up to 3.5 tons.
How much is the Toyota Hilux GR Sport?
The Toyota Hilux GR Sport will cost £37,551 on the road without VAT, which translates to £44,995 with VAT. It is still a bargain compared to a Ford Ranger MS-RT, which costs an eye-watering £49,075 before VAT. Hilux GR Sport is also more affordable than a Ranger Raptor (£44,300 ex. VAT).
With a lot of standard equipment, the Hilux GR Sport makes a good pick-up truck deal.
