BMW plug-in hybrid
BMW has launched a new plug-in hybrid powertrain for its X1 and X2 SUVs. The X1 xDrive25e is available to order now priced from £38,200, with first deliveries arriving in March 2020, while the X2 PHEV will go on sale in summer 2020.
The X1 and X2 xDrive25’e launch is part of BMW’s goal to have more than one million electrified vehicles on the road by late 2021. The company estimates a quarter of the vehicles sold in Europe by then will be electrified, with the percentage estimated to reach 33 by the middle of the decade and 50 percent by 2030. To achieve this objective, four new X PHEV models are on the agenda as part of a greater plan to launch 25 new electrified vehicles by 2023.
The BMW X1 xDrive25e plug-in hybrid is now available to order. Prices start at £38,200 - a jump of almost £10,000 over the entry-level model - and first deliveries are expected in March. In a few months’ time, the hybrid BMW X2 will join the range, using the same powertrain. The price of this model, plus final specs, will be revealed closer to launch.
The BMW X1 xDrive25e
With new driving modes that offer intelligently controlled interaction between the petrol engine and electric motor, the BMW X1 xDrive25e adds a new angle to the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) experience. Available as a Sport, xLine and M Sport model, it comes with the latest-generation lithium-ion battery and offers up to 35 miles* in pure electric driving mode.
The xDrive25e models feature a 94bhp electric motor connected to a 10kWh battery along with 1.5 litre 3-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and an electric drive specially developed for this model. The petrol engine sends power to the front wheels and the electric motor drives the rears. BMW claims the X1 xDrive25e can complete 0-62 mph in 6.9 seconds and go on to a top speed of 120 mph.
The battery and electric motor only slightly reduce the available boot space in the X1, and you can expect it to be a similar story in the X2. There are 455 litres of space behind the back seats of the BMW X1 xDrive25e, compared to 505 litres in non-hybrid versions. A 40:20:40 split-folding rear bench is standard and folding it down brings total luggage space to 1,470 litres.
X1 PHEV offers claimed economy figures of between 134.5mpg and 148.7mpg and CO2 emissions of between 43 and 48 g/km of CO2.
THE BMW X2 xDrive25e
The versatile BMW X2 was designed for modern living, so it makes sense for it to now be available as a plug-in hybrid model later this year in the summer of 2020. Packing the latest-generation lithium-ion battery (10kWh), the intelligent eDrive button, and a highly efficient electric drive, it can go up to 35 miles in pure electric.
Together, the combustion 3-cylinder petrol engine and electric motor produce a system output of 220hp and 385Nm of torque. It also features a hybrid-specific all-wheel-drive system, which distributes power between the front and rear wheels, and delivers awesome acceleration and agility.
X2 can complete 0-62 mph in 6.8 seconds and the top speed is 121 mph making it slightly faster than X1.
So far, BMW has only confirmed efficiency numbers for the X1 PHEV. Specifications for the X2 PHEV will be released nearer to the SUV’s launch in summer.
Charging X1 and X2 xDrive25e
Charging takes around five hours using a household socket, falling to a little over three hours using a BMW i Wallbox fast-charger. You can choose from ‘Max eDrive’, ‘Save Battery’ and ‘Auto’ driving modes, which tell the car to run on electric, petrol or a combination of both respectively. In the Auto mode, the car uses information from the sat nav to work out when to use the engine and when to use the electric motor.
